Concert 1

SMETANA Ma Vlast Sárka
SIBELIUS Violin Concerto
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.6 Pathétique

Sibelius’ Violin Concerto begins with the soloist’s lonely cry, etched against the Northern sky, before beginning a moody, mercurial flight to an exhilarating finale. Demanding exceptional technique and maturity, this concerto is perhaps the most exalted and emotive in the repertoire. Above all, it’s a musical distillation of the uniquely Finnish quality of sisu – fortitude or ‘guts’ – a quality which brilliant young soloist Hilary Hahn has in abundance, having made her major orchestra debut at 15 with this concerto. Winner of two Grammy Awards, Hahn is a dazzling and sophisticated presence to begin
the 2010 Season.

A cold wind blows through the opening of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, a tragic sigh that is unmistakably Russian. Though bookended by grief, Tchaikovsky’s final and finest symphony throbs with life, humour and, above all, song (the nickname ‘Pathétique’ was bestowed on the work by Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest). “Without exaggeration, I have put my whole soul into this work,” Tchaikovsky said. Like many deeply personal works of art, it has universal meaning. It speaks to us of the human condition in all its joy and sadness.
