Concerts

The World of Rodgers & Hammerstein

Sponsored by Sunday Star-Times in association with Phonak NZ Ltd, The World of Rodgers & Hammerstein is a spectacular, romantic concert containing more than twenty of their wonderful songs. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein were the most popular writers of their day. From 1941 to 1959 they wrote five of the most successful musicals ever produced – Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King & I and The Sound of Music. Had their collaboration produced only one of these they would still have been celebrated as the most successful creators of musical theatre the world has known.

This concert features two West End soloists and contains all the most famous songs from these great enduring musicals as well as four masterful orchestral pieces. The American musical perfectly captured the wholesome image of American life, while not shying away from the motivations of characters. Through lyrics which mined the emotional and spiritual depth of his characters Hammerstein also revealed the less attractive sides of human nature, while Richard Rodgers’ dazzling symphonic music matched those words to complete perfection.
