Wagner’s epic operas require a superhuman breed of singer to contend with the incredible demands of the music. The Heldentenor (heroic tenor) is the powerful voice of Siegfried, Tristan, Parsifal and Lohengrin, of demigods, knights and lovers. Few tenors have established themselves at this summit of singing as quickly and decisively as New Zealand’s own Simon O’Neill. He has worked with a roll-call of the world’s great conductors – Boulez, Gergiev, Pappano and Barenboim – in leading roles at New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden. In 2010, he makes his La Scala debut with Die Walküre.
Hear the leading Wagnerian tenor of his generation perform highlights from the Ring Cycle, Parsifal and Lohengrin – music which calls for a voice as radiant as it is room-filling, as well as the charisma of a born star. Orchestral interludes from Wagner’s operas enhance this feast for opera-lovers.
