SCHOENBERG Transfigured Night
SCHUMANN Cello Concerto
BRAHMS (orch. Schoenberg) Piano Quartet

In a scene of rapt nocturnal beauty, two lovers walk in the moonlight. The woman is pregnant to another man but her companion’s love for her transfigures the child. Schoenberg depicts this moment with surging melody and waves of rich harmony that will engulf you. It’s the perfect overture for another work of passionate Romanticism: Schumann’s Cello Concerto. The eloquent voice of the cello suits Schumann’s rhapsodic style. Written in two turbulent weeks as Schumann struggled with manic-depression, the cello concerto is a deeply personal but always lucid piece and a wonderful showcase for the expressive prowess of Li-Wei Qin, who at 30 has established himself as a musician of huge musical imagination and spirit.

Finally, Schoenberg pays homage to his ‘mentor’ Brahms with his orchestral transfiguration of Brahms’ Piano Quartet. Schoenberg re-fashions the work perfectly for the orchestra. He uses all of the brilliant colours at his disposal to amplify the lyrical power of Brahms’ chamber music.
