The Alex Lindsay Award, which is a registered trust, was founded in memory of former New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster, Alex Lindsay, who died in 1974.

Since its inception in 1975, the Alex Lindsay Award has granted funds in excess of $200,000. Previous winners have included Wilma Smith, Donald Armstrong, Ashley Brown, Martin Riseley and Alexa Still.

In 2000, the trustees introduced the NZSO National Youth Orchestra Special Prize valued at $1,000. It is awarded each year to an outstanding member of the NZSO NYO who demonstrates performance excellence and potential. The winner is chosen by the trustees after consultation with the NYO Conductor, the NYO Coordinator and NZSO principals.
