The Michael Monaghan Scholars mentoring programme is a nationwide initiative offering mentoring from NZSO players to talented young musicians. The programme offers a first hand look at the rewards of a life as a professional musician. Past mentor scheme participants have progressed to study music at tertiary level, perform in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and professional orchestras throughout New Zealand.
The selected students will receive mentoring from a member of the NZSO including lessons and rehearsal observation. The programme will culminate in a performance opportunity for some of the students with the NZSO in 2011.

Every year, musicians from the NZSO spend time giving sectional surgeries with youth orchestras and school orchestras around the country, working with them to nurture and encourage the next generation of New Zealand’s orchestral players.
The NZSO Foundation Masterclasses provide the opportunity for young New Zealand musicians to learn from the distinguished international artists who perform as guests with the NZSO.
In 2010 the NZSO Foundation Masterclasses will include sessions with Hilary Hahn, Li Wei and Colin Currie. More details on these sessions will be updated soon.
Driven by the vision of our Music Director Pietari Inkinen, the NZSO Fellowship programme will provide a small group of elite young players with a yearlong association with the NZSO. The participants will travel to Wellington on a regular basis where they will have the opportunity to work with our guest artists and conductors. They will also be mentored by Pietari himself who will lead the artistic vision of the programme.
The NZSO/Todd Corporation Young Composer Awards are a unique opportunity for young New Zealand Composers to have their work performed and recorded by the NZSO. Their work will be assessed by a panel of industry professionals and those selected for the Awards will receive mentoring from an established New Zealand composer.
The 2009 NZSO/Todd Corporation Young Composer Awards received a record number of applications, with composers aged 17 to 25 years from throughout New Zealand. Celebrated NZ composer, Ross Harris acting as composer/mentor to these young composers.
This year the top award winner will receive a cash award of $750 and will be offered a commission to work alongside a chamber group from the NZSO to compose a piece to be performed in schools throughout New Zealand.
