NZSO Chairman Donald Best has welcomed the release of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s review of the orchestral sector.

“The Board is pleased that the NZSO’s role as New Zealand’s national orchestra has been affirmed, that it will continue to be owned by the people of New Zealand and fulfil its legislated objectives to deliver symphonic music performed to an international standard to audiences across the nation.

“The quality of the NZSO is recognised internationally and New Zealand audiences are rightfully proud of the Orchestra and its achievements.  We are pleased that our leadership has been recognised and endorsed by the Review.

“It is also important that people will continue to experience the NZSO in live performances through our annual touring programme.  The Ministry has provided guidance on where we should deliver our performances in future and we will be focusing on further building our audiences in those centres.

“We look forward to working closely with our colleagues in the professional orchestra sector to implement the recommendations of the Review.”
