Frederick Jones

British born New Zealand tenor, Frederick Jones is a 2019/2020 Young Artist at the National Opera Studio 2019, and was a 2019 Jerwood Young Artist with Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

He has recently completed the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, having gained a Master of Arts in Advanced Vocal Studies with Distinction from the Wales International Academy of Voice, studying with tenor Dennis O’Neill. He graduated from Te Kōkī, The New Zealand School of Music with a Postgraduate Diploma in operatic performance (Distinction), having previously completed a BMus in Performance Voice here.

Frederick attended the 2017 Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto, and the 2016 Lisa Gasteen National Opera School with a full scholarship. He competed and placed first in both the Wellington Dame Malvina Major Foundation Aria Competition and the coveted New Zealand Aria Competition in 2016.

His operatic performances include Araldo Rinaldo (Glyndebourne Festival Opera); Lysander A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ferrando Così fan tutte, Charles The Long Christmas Dinner (Guildhall School of Music and Drama); Ensemble Soloist Candide, London Symphony Orchestra; Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress (British Youth Opera); Torero, Ainadamar (Golijov) (The New Zealand Festival production with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra); Der Rosenkavalier - various roles – (Day’s Bay Opera); Oronte (cover) Alcina (Day’s Bay Opera); Starvelling A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The New Zealand School of Music); Raimondado Carmen (The New Zealand Choral Foundation); Bill A Hand of Bridge (The New Zealand School of Music); Thomas Brown The Zoo and Counsel for the Plaintiff Trial by Jury (The Garden opera Company).

Frederick is the recipient of a Help Musicians UK Sybil Tutton Award and is sponsored by the Todd Family Trust and the John and Margaret Hunn Educational Trust. Frederick is sponsored at the National Opera Studio with a Young Artist Development Award from the Glyndebourne New Generation Programme. He is also a 2019 recipient of an Independent Opera Voice Fellowship.
