Handel Messiah

Hallelujah! In what is now an annual tradition, the NZSO performs Messiah as our final concert for the year.

Composed in 1741, it received a lukewarm reception at its first London performance. However, over the years it has grown in popularity. Although Messiah is structured like an opera, it features no characters or dialogue. Handel completed the work in just 24 days.

Sydney-born conductor Graham Abbott has conducted Messiah more than 70 times and is a Life Member of the American Handel Society. He is joined by four stunning soloists, Australian soprano Celeste Lazarenko and New Zealand’s own Anna Pierard (mezzo-soprano), Jonathan Abernethy (tenor) and Hadleigh Adams (bass).

Since it was formed in 1947, the NZSO regularly performed Messiah until 1975. However, we did not perform the world’s most famous oratorio in full again until 2012. This year we are joined by Wellington’s Orpheus Choir for a rousing performance of Handel’s best- known work.
