Marin Alsop Conductor
Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in D Minor
Originally slated for 2020, this unique performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is even more relevant as the world faces changeable and difficult times. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and its famous deployment Schiller's poem Ode to Joy, has long been a symbol and celebration of Beethoven’s values of fraternity, equality and unity. In this spirit, NZSO invites young performers from across the country to join us in singing the chorus, with a new translation in te reo Māori, to be sung during Beethoven’s great Ninth Symphony. In addition, the NZSO have commissioned new works to complement Beethoven’s Ninth.
This concert was originally part of the 2020 Carnegie Hall’s All Together: A Global Ode to Joy project, in which orchestras from Brazil, Austria, South Africa, Britain and Australia also performed Beethoven’s Ninth with lyrics sung in the local languages of each country – thus connecting the NZSO’s Kia Kotahi concert with the rest of the world, in a global unified celebration in song.
