PROKOFIEV – Peter and the Wolf Op.67

concert duration: 1h40

Legendary All Blacks hooker and arts connoisseur Anton Oliver packs down with the NZSO in a concert of tall tales and tangos. Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf introduced millions of children to classical music, and in this performance Oliver narrates the story of how Peter, together with his animal friends, out-smart the devious wolf. In another flight of fancy, sugar-plum fairies and Russian dancers take centre stage in Tchaikovsky’s charming selections from The Nutcracker.. Our dance theme continues as New Zealand composer David Farquhar’s Short Suite from Ring Round the Moon Suite tangos, polkas and waltzes us away.

More Information

Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite is a colourful orchestral confectionery, sprinkled with exotic melodies and topped with a brilliant finale. Rich harmonies and unexpected sonorities make Farquhar’s Short Suite from Ring Round the Moon Suite much more than a collection of dances. The highlight of this evening, Peter and the Wolf ,delights children and adults alike as the bird, duck, cat and our incorrigible hero turn the tables on the wolf. Funny, capricious and completely captivating, this is a concert for the whole family.
