Dvořák Symphony No. 9 in E Minor ‘From the New World’, Op. 95 IV. Allegro con fuoco
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra presents a free concert as part of the 2019 Te Papa Matariki Festival.
Opening with George Morton’s arrangement of Uranus from Holst’s The Planets, the Orchestra then performs New Zealand composer Gillian Whitehead’s Resurgences. The work reflects on the moon’s influence on the tides and wider natural world. It’s a piece that surges forward, constantly moving and adding more and more layers.
Written at the time of the winter solstice, Leonie Holmes’ Solsticeevokes the cold earth, and the rituals that have been performed through the ages to encourage the coming of sunrise, warmth, light and rebirth.
Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 From the New World is influenced by the native cultures he experienced when he travelled to America in the 1890s. Its fourth and final movement is a rousing and exciting finale.
As the Māori new year celebration, Matariki is a time for renewal. It is time to remember the year just gone, particularly loved ones who have passed and to express hopes and aspirations for the year to come.
