David Moonan

Before joining the NZSO horn section in 2010 David was Principal/Acting Principal horn of 10 orchestras in the US, Spain, and Mexico, including the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Mexico City Philharmonic, and the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra in Mexico City.

In 2009 he was guest Principal Horn of the Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid in Madrid. He graduated from Northern Illinois University, where he attended as a full scholarship student and was a solo competition winner. While a student he was invited to study at the music festivals at Tanglewood and the Music Academy of the West, and was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony.

On different occasions David has taken time off his music career to pursue other interests, and for four years was the caretaker of a 300 acre farm in Vermont, tending cows, chickens, turkeys and bees. Outside of the orchestra David enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, tramping and working in the garden, and is co-trustee of Arohanui Strings-Sistema Hutt Valley, a Sistema inspired music programme based in Taita.
