Gregory Hill

After studying horn at Auckland and Victoria (Wellington) universities, Gregory’s first engagements with the NZSO were as a casual player in 1976. More experience followed with a position in the then Symphonia of Auckland, and further private study in Chicago. Greg moved to Australia at the end of the 70’s and was a member of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Sydney Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He slowly moved south, looking for a part of Australia he liked, until after Tasmania, the only option was to return to New Zealand in 1987, to take up his current position in the NZSO. Greg has been Lecturer in Horn and Artist Teacher at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and the NZ School of Music.

In recent years he has made occasional appearances with orchestras as diverse as the Southern Sinfonia and the Guangzhou Film and Television Orchestra. Greg has an interest in historic horn-related instruments, enjoys cooking (and eating), and does a bit of tramping, sometimes with an alphorn on his back. He has two adult sons and lives in Newtown with his wife Anne, who is a member of the NZSO First Violin section.
