Chinese-born NZSO first violinist Haihong is a graduate of the prestigious Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in the People’s Republic of China, where she won the China National Chamber Music Competition in 1995 with her string quartet. After six years teaching as a violin and chamber music lecturer at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music of Guangzhou, in 2001 Haihong immigrated to New Zealand with her family, joining APO as sub-principal first violin, before she joined the NZSO in 2002.
The NZSO Europe Tour 2010 and the Vienna Musikverein appearance are the highlights of Haihong’s time with the orchestra. With Aroha String Quartet, Haihong enjoy touring chamber music concerts nationwide and overseas. As well as developing her new hobbies in New Zealand of fishing, skiing, and camping with her musical family.
Haihong's husband Zhongxian plays viola, while her son, 27-year-old James plays violin in APO. Her 8-year-old son Zishan, meanwhile, enjoys playing hide-and-seek in an attempt to escape his daily task on 1/4 violin.
