ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, HORN

Horn Section Ian Wildsmith2

Ian started seriously pursuing the French Horn after attending the Conservatorium of Music High School in Sydney, where he studied with Andrew Bain and Ben Jacks. 

Ian continued his studies in England, aided by funding from Ars Musica Australis, completing a Bachelor of Music Honours in 2015 from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where he studied with Lindsey Stoker and Tim Jackson. 

Whilst in England he performed with the European Union Youth Orchestra between 2013 and 2015. He also participated in the Professional Engagement Schemes with the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra and Opera North as well as the London Sinfonietta Academy.

Ian moved back to Australia in 2016 to continue studies at the Australian National Academy of Music and shortly thereafter was awarded Principal Horn with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2018. 

As an orchestral musician he has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera North. As a soloist he has performed works by Bach, Britten, Dukas, Mozart and Richard Strauss with orchestra. 

Ian joined the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 2019 as their Associate Principal 3rd Horn.
