VICTORIA
CROWELL

ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, BASSOON

Vicky Crowell

Vicky was born and bred in Sussex, England and studied bassoon and contra at the Royal College of Music London and the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, Switzerland. During her studies she participated in masterclasses in Germany with such luminaries of the bassoon world as Dag Jensen, Klaus Thunemann and Sergio Azzolini. She also doubles on the clarinet and saxophone and has been a regular deputy in musicals in Londons West End.

Vicky joined the orchestra in 2016 but even in the 21st century it's a male dominated world and if Vicky is bitter that the two principal bassoon positions in the NZSO are filled by men who between them can only muster grades 5 and 6 she's concealed the pain behind her sunny exterior.

In her spare time Vicky enjoys baking, karaoke, go-karting, watching Disney films, drinking the occasional (cluster of) jägerbombs and listening to Beyoncé. She is also proud to say that she has already achieved her life ambition of being top of the NZSO Fantasy Football league.

To her horror Vicky has begun aquiring a NZ accent complete with rising terminal and is uncertain whether she'll be able to stay in the country.
