We’re keeping the music going

Like all of you since 26 March, every member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is housebound during the COVID-19 restrictions. But that hasn’t stopped your national orchestra bringing music to all of New Zealand.

We moved quickly to create Engage@Home, presenting new online performances of works by the great composers through to contemporary New Zealand works.

On 25 March we premiered our new online video concert series Play Our Part, in association with our performing partner RNZ Concert, featuring NZSO players performing in their homes. Some players present solo pieces, while some players perform the same piece in their separate homes. We’ve even had our first international guest, with American violinist Shana Douglas, under lockdown in London, duet with NZSO Associate Principal Cellist Ken Ichinose in Wellington.

The response to Play Our Part has been overwhelming. Thousands of people watched the 25 March and 1 April premieres. We’re heartened by the hundreds of messages of support from concert-goers, subscribers, supporters and our arts community colleagues.

Along with more weekly Play Our Part performances and videos of previous NZSO concerts, we’re working on a variety of digital content under Engage@Home and a new viewer-friendly way to experience the NZSO online. We’ll announce the details very soon.
