RELAXED CONCERT

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is excited to tour Relaxed Concerts through its Setting Up Camp project in March 2020.

NZSO relaxed concerts perform for audiences who may feel uncomfortable in a traditional concert environment. This concert is particularly suited to people with autism, sensory and communication disorders or a learning disability. In 2020, the NZSO is pleased to offer these free concerts in Wellington, Palmerston North, Tauranga and Hamilton. There will be a relaxed attitude to noise and movement during the performance. Lighting effects are minimal and a ‘chill out’ space will be available.

NZSO Relaxed Concert – FAQs

How is this different to a normal NZSO concert?

The NZSO relaxed concerts perform for audiences who may feel uncomfortable in a traditional concert environment. This concert is particularly suited to people with autism, sensory and communication disorders or a learning disability. There will be a relaxed attitude to noise and movement during the performance. Lighting effects are minimal and a ‘chill out’ space is available.

What if we need to leave the auditorium during the performance?

It is fine to move around and leave the auditorium at anytime during the performance. If you need to get away from the concert there will be a ‘chill-out’ space in the atrium outside the main auditorium.

We’ve never been to the NZSO before. How can we prepare to attend the concert?

The NZSO will be preparing a pre-concert guide and video, outlining the whole experience of attending an NZSO concert at Shed 6. This will include a step by step guide to the venue and the special spaces we’re creating as part of this concert. This information will be available from 2 August at nzso.co.nz/relaxed-concert.

What will the lighting situation be like?

We have been in consultation with CCS Disability Action and we will work with appropriate lighting schemes for each venue. The musicians may be using sconces on their stands.
