Assistant Concertmaster (Fixed Term)

The NZSO is at the pinnacle of orchestral achievement in Aotearoa New Zealand and is recognised as an orchestra of international standing. We continue to grow and develop artistically, taking a challenging and varied programme of music to communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. One of the world’s oldest national symphony orchestras, we have charmed audiences with memorable concerts and recordings for over 75 years.


We are inviting expressions of interest for the fixed-term position of Assistant Concertmaster here at the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

The key function of the role is to play 3rd Chair in the First Violin section and deputise for the Associate Concertmaster (2nd chair) and Concertmaster (1st chair) when rostered.

The contract term is from 22 September to 27 November 2026 but is negotiable for the right candidate.

REQUIREMENTS

  • The musician we’re looking for demonstrates:

  • The highest level of ability and musicianship

  • Exceptional leadership qualities

    • Candidates must have the required skillset to lead the orchestra when required

  • The willingness to relocate to Wellington, New Zealand for the contract period
