Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor was not in fact Mendelssohn’s first – he had written another in D minor when he was 13 – but this concerto was first in so many other aspects that it has well and truly overshadowed that other work.
In many ways, the work is the prototype on which later works are based. Brahms’ collaboration with violinist Joseph Joachim echoes Mendelssohn and David’s and also resulted in a monumental violin concerto. On the sturdy shoulders of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor stand the foundations of solo violin repertoire from then until today.
