Written in 1786, Horn Concerto No. 4 was composed for Mozart's friend, Joseph Leutgeb, a virtuoso horn player to whom Mozart dedicated all four of his horn concertos. Mozart fondly referred to this piece as "a hunting horn concerto for Leutgeb," highlighting its playful nature.
The whimsical character of the work can even be seen in the different colours Mozart used when writing the manuscript!
