NZSO Alumni

Since 1939 there have been over 550 alumni.

1939 saw the establishment of the National Broadcasting Service String Orchestra, then in 1940 the Centennial Symphony Orchestra was formed from the nucleus of the NBS String Orchestra. Government deemed it unsustainable during WW2 and split into the NBS String Quartet under Vincent Aspey and also the NBS Light Orchestra. In December 1988 BCNZ was dissolved and the NZSO becomes a crown-owned entity. So, we actually count our alumni from 1939.
