David Bremner

Trombone, Section Principal

David is Principal Trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 2002.

Before this appointment, David served as the principal trombone of the Auckland Philharmonia.

Born in New Plymouth, he began his early musical studies on cornet and euphonium under the guidance of his father, Trevor Bremner. After switching to trombone, he graduated with honours from Victoria University of Wellington, studying with Marc Taddei.

David was awarded the prestigious Patricia Pratt Scholarship to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and graduated with a Master of Music degree studying with Mark Lawrence.

He was a finalist in the Gisborne Music Competition, placed third in the New Zealand Young Musicians Competition, and won California's Shenson Young Musicians competition.

As a soloist, David has performed concertos with the NZSO (including the world premiere of Gareth Farr's trombone concerto Funambulistic Strains), recorded Lyell Cresswell's concerto Kaia for Naxos Records, was one of seven featured NZSO Principals in Eve De Castro Robinson's The Glittering hosts of Heaven, and performed Sandstrom's Double Trombone Concerto alongside Christian Lindberg.

In 2009, his debut solo CD Gung-Ho, featuring the NZSO and the National Brass Band of New Zealand, won the Classical Music Award at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

A versatile musician, David has recorded with Crowded House, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, as well as numerous brass bands across Australasia and the UK.

He is a founding member of Bonanza Trombone Quartet, Music Director of the Champion Band of New Zealand Wellington Brass, and Music Director of the National Band of New Zealand.

David is the Director of Education for Brass Bands New Zealand, and a trustee of the Kia Ora Foundation. He is also a founder and trustee of the New Zealand Brass Foundation, and the presenter of Brilliant Brass on Radio Concert.
