Mahler Symphony No. 6
Mahler's colossal Sixth Symphony is an orchestral masterpiece. Featuring more than 100 musicians, including two harps and off-stage bells, it was noted even in its own time for “surpass[ing] its predecessors in solidity of structure, but also in its realism and nerve-wracking intensity” (Julius Korngold). The final movement famously includes tremendous blows from a giant hammer, said to represent the debilitating blows of fate.
Last performed by the NZSO in 2011, the Sixth Symphony continues Maestra New cycle of Mahler symphonies with the orchestra. New’s interpretations of Mahler are becoming renowned for their "intelligent and emotional" performances. (New Zealand Arts Review). We look forward to seeing what she can do with the Sixth.
