Programme

Beethoven Piano Concertos 1 & 5

Celebrate Beethoven’s revolutionary genius with a rare opportunity to hear all five piano concertos across two concerts. Spanish pianist Javier Perianes returns to the NZSO to perform and direct from the keyboard, bringing his celebrated combination of modesty, brilliance and poetic insight to this monumental undertaking.

The cycle traces Beethoven’s extraordinary development: from the grace and classical sparkle of the early concertos, through the searching drama of the Third and the luminous poetry of the Fourth, to the heroic sweep of the Fifth, the Emperor. Perianes and the orchestra meet as equal partners in music that is intimate, daring and endlessly inventive.

Experience either programme as a compelling concert in its own right—or attend both to follow the full arc of a composer who changed the course of music.
