R Strauss Don Juan
Lauri Porra Entropia Concerto for Electric Bass
Sibelius Symphony No. 2
Feel the full force of the orchestra in a programme charged with energy. Powerhouse Ukrainian conductor Dalia Stasevska makes her NZSO debut with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2, a work that rises from restless beginnings to a blazing, triumphant conclusion. Richard Strauss’ lush and impetuous Don Juan launches the concert in a rush of romance and adventure.
Then legendary Finnish bassist Lauri Porra—Sibelius’ great-grandson and Stasevska’s husband—steps into the spotlight for Entropia, his virtuosic concerto for electric bass. Moving between classical lyricism and the intensity of Scandinavian power metal, the work is by turns unexpectedly gentle and thrillingly expressive.
With vivid musical leadership, spectacular orchestral writing and a solo instrument rarely heard in the concert hall, Electrify promises an exhilarating night.
