Look from the wonders of Earth to the vastness of the heavens in the Aotearoa New Zealand premiere of Olivier Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles… (From the Canyons to the Stars…).
Inspired by the composer’s visit to Utah’s breathtaking Bryce Canyon, this visionary work transforms birdsong, colour, rock and starlight into music of awe and elation. André de Ridder leads an unusual and vivid ensemble featuring four soloists—piano, horn, xylorimba and glockenspiel—alongside the NZSO. Lighting projections of the cosmos fill Wellington Town Hall, creating an immersive meeting of sound, space and image.
By turns intimate, radiant and overwhelming, Messiaen’s masterpiece invites us to contemplate the beauty of the natural world and the mysteries beyond it. A rare, once-in-a-lifetime centrepiece of the Cosmic Festival.
