Programme

Beethoven, Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper, Troy Kingi Symphony No. 9 Kia Kotahi

Hear Beethoven’s mighty Ninth Symphony renewed through an inspired Aotearoa collaboration. Musician and national taonga Troy Kingi joins forces with composer Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper and the NZSO to reimagine a work whose message of unity has resonated for two centuries.

New interludes by Kingi and Bridgman-Cooper sit between Beethoven’s movements, opening fresh pathways into the symphony and building towards its famous finale. There, the triumphant Ode to Joy is sung in te reo Māori, allowing Beethoven’s emphatic call for fellowship to be heard anew.

Originally conceived for 2020 and delayed by the pandemic, Kia Kotahi finally reaches the stage under Music Director André de Ridder. This special project brings musical traditions, languages and communities together in a powerful celebration of connection: kia kotahi—be one.
