Kenneth Young’s Schism opens the concert with a distinctive New Zealand voice, exploring contrast, tension and connection through vivid string writing.

Brahms’ Sextet No. 1 follows with music of glowing richness and generous lyricism, its six independent voices woven into a sonority of remarkable depth.

Mendelssohn’s Octet provides an exhilarating finale. Written when the composer was just 16, it is a miracle of youthful invention—light-footed, brilliant and powered by an irresistible sense of forward motion.
