Take a musical magic-carpet ride through worlds of fantasy, colour and adventure. Saint-Saëns’ seductive Bacchanale sets the scene before Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s Clarinet Concerto receives its New Zealand premiere.
Written for French clarinettist Pierre Génisson, the concerto blends Western and Eastern influences in music shaped by his smooth, subtle and expressive sound. Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Scheherazade completes the journey. Inspired by the folktales of One Thousand and One Nights, it transforms the stories of a brilliant princess, voyaging sailors and enchanted worlds into sumptuous orchestral colour.
