Camille Pépin Laniakea
Nielsen Flute Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
Romance, brilliance and irresistible momentum fill this spirited programme. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 charts an extraordinary path from a brooding “fate” motif to a triumphant final transformation. Along the way comes one of music’s most lyrical moments: the second movement’s unforgettable horn solo, surrounded by music of yearning warmth and sweeping drama.
NZSO Section Principal Flute Bridget Douglas steps forward for Nielsen’s playful Flute Concerto, a sparkling conversation full of wit, surprise and exquisite musical detail.
Rising French conductor Chloé Dufresne makes her NZSO debut, bringing dynamism and clarity to the programme, which opens with Camille Pépin’s luminous Laniakea. Named for the vast supercluster that contains our galaxy, Pépin’s music sets the stage for an evening alive with colour, imagination and emotional power.
