Verdi Messa da Requiem
Gemma New returns to conduct Verdi’s monumental Requiem—a sacred work driven by all the drama, emotion and theatrical power of opera.
Massed voices, blazing brass and a stellar quartet of soloists, including Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor and internationally renowned bass Nathan Berg, bring the traditional mass for the dead to visceral life. At its centre is the thunderous “Dies irae”, one of music’s most terrifying visions of judgement; elsewhere, Verdi offers moments of hushed prayer, soaring beauty and profound human vulnerability. Voices New Zealand and Orpheus Choir join the NZSO for this unforgettable experience.
The concert opens with Robert Wiremu’s Tahuri koe ki te maunga teitei, performed in tribute to the much-loved Aotearoa composer and musician. Prepare to be thrilled, awed and deeply moved.
