Sub-Principal

Shadley van Wyk is a French horn player based in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2015, he was appointed Principal Horn of Orchestra Wellington, followed by his appointment in 2023 as Sub-Principal French Horn with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO). He completed his studies under Gregory Hill (Associate Principal, NZSO), Edward Allen (Principal, NZSO), and Samuel Jacobs (Principal, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra), graduating with honours.

In addition to touring New Zealand with the NZSO, Shadley has performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. He has also completed three chamber opera tours to Tokyo.

Beyond his orchestral work, Shadley performs in various chamber ensembles; most recently, he performed the Britten Serenade at New Zealand’s premier international chamber music festival, the Adam Chamber Music Festival. When not on stage, Shadley is a long-distance trail runner, often found exploring trails throughout New Zealand.
